Not content with playing an ICTA match every Wednesday, Kathy drives into Kew Gardens with two other long time West end players, Dale Kocicz and Pam Olley, to compete in the Premier Division of the Toronto Ladies Tennis League every Monday night. The competitive fire still burns in Kathy and she would enjoy testing herself against teams from other parts of Canada when the Miele League Challenge rolls out nationally. “We do tend to play the same players season after season, so it would be great to see what BC or Quebec would bring to the court.”

Winter weather in May doesn't stop these ladies
Over at the Boulevard Club on a cold, wintry day in mid May, Jan Chepesiuk was wishing the bubble was still up on the courts. Braving what some called “the worst day I’ve ever played a match on” the intrepid players from the B Division of the Toronto Ladies League were chasing swirling balls and alternating between gloves and rain gear. The Boulevard team is laughing it up with their opponents from Tam Heather. In this weather a sense of humour is essential. For Jan, not only is tennis a sport for a lifetime, it’s also one of the few truly family sports. She plays with her husband and sons and is proud that the Boulevard Club won the ICTA Mixed C championships at the Rexall Centre last September.

The premier Toronto leagues include the Inter-County Tennis Association (ICTA), the Toronto Men’s Tennis League (TMTL) and the Toronto Ladies Tennis League (TLTL) which all have varying levels of competition to accommodate skill level and playing ability of the participants. This is the first phase of a five-year plan which will begin in the GTA this year and roll out nationally in subsequent years.
With more than 7,000 organized members, 400 teams and more than 100 clubs involved, this groundbreaking initiative will feature weekly league matches during the spring and summer to determine the top teams that will be showcased during the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
During the final weekend of the Rogers Cup, the top two teams in the Mixed Majors division of the ICTA will play an exhibition match on Saturday morning, with the top two teams from the top two divisions of each of the Men’s and Ladies’ Leagues playing matches on the Sunday morning. Each league will receive a number of grounds passes for these matches in order for league constituents, team members and families to come support their teams at the Rogers Cup, while taking in the atmosphere of an ATP Masters Series tournament. A number of matches will be Web cast live on the Tennis Canada Web site for those constituents who cannot make it to the Rogers Cup.
In addition to the exhibition matches at the Rogers Cup, each league will receive a number of benefits. The Ladies League will feature six sessions of doubles coaching clinics at the Rexall Centre during the Rogers Cup. The Miele League Challenge will also contribute to the year-end league banquet. The ICTA will hold its year-end playoffs at the Rexall Centre in September. Finally, the Men’s League will have a special suite to host their constituents during the Rogers Cup.

Former college player still heating up the court
The Miele League Challenge launch was organized to coincide with the first match of the season for the ICTA Ladies League where a seasoned ORC team is challenging last year’s Division A winners. Three levels of play up and one row of courts over from the press conference was where one former junior player easily handled her awestruck opponents. Kathy Mueller has played tennis since she was 10 years old and has been a Line 1 fixture for ORC since she arrived from the United States, two babies in tow, 18 years ago.
