A Pot of Gold for Unionville Tennis Club

When the Tennis Canada Ambassador arrived with the entry package for her team to compete at the Miele League Challenge, Amy Wong felt like she must be standing on the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that was gracefully tracing across the sky at their evening match. Amy is the captain for the ICTA Mixed Majors team from Unionville and had been waiting for confirmation that her team would be competing on Saturday, July 26 at the Rogers Cup. “We had made it our goal this season to play at the Challenge,” Amy told us. “My team works really hard and we practice together as often as possible.” Unionville Tennis Club has 1000 members and is very active in league play, with 14 ICTA teams. “I'm sure that we will have a large contingent of supporters,” says club President Sandra Edwards. Free early-entry grounds passes for the Miele League Challenge matches are available from the ICTA league convener or Adwynna MacKenzie. Unionville played at the Rogers Cup last year, losing to Howard Park, so they have extra motivation to win this summer. “Either way, I am proud that we have made it to the Challenge and this motivation has created lasting friendships that we will be forever thankful for.” Sounds like Amy and her team already have the pot of gold.

Grand Finale for TLTL Evening A1 Division

No matter what the outcome of the last match of the season for the TLTL A1 Evening Division, the Moore Park team knew they would be moved down a level to play at A2 next summer. Yet, they still fought like champions. Three of the four matches went to three sets, set scores were close and the points were brilliantly played. Yet, no wins got recorded for the home team. “Sometimes you have a season like that,” said Cheryll Corness, the loser in a third set tie break and captain for many years. “You just can’t win the close ones.” For most players, league matches are rarely about winning your division. After all, only one in eight teams can take home the top spot. Players like the variety that league play offers and many play because they enjoy the social aspect of being on a team. The visiting team from the Granite Club had no championship dreams at stake either although they were pleased to end the season on a high note. During the post match munchies, all of the players were quick to point out how good the tennis was, how nice everyone behaved on the court and how terrific the line calls were…the standard by which the majority of league matches are judged.

Cheer on Your Team at the 2008 Miele League Challenge

The teams competing at the 2008 Miele League Challenge have been determined. Captains and players have been notified and excitement is growing as the news spreads throughout their clubs and leagues. Matches will take place on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27 prior to the ATP semifinals and finals of the Rogers Cup (see Miele League Challenge schedule). Grounds passes to the Miele League Challenge matches are free, but all participants and fans are required to have a special grounds pass that permits early entry into the Rexall Centre. Even if you have purchased tickets for the semifinals or the finals of the Rogers Cup you still need this grounds pass in order to get in before the gates officially open. To come out and cheer on your favorite team, contact your league convener or Adwynna MacKenzie, manager, Miele League Challenge to get your free early-entry grounds pass.

Even if you cannot attend, you can still cheer on your favorite team. A number of Miele League Challenge matches will be Web cast live on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. on www.tenniscanada.ca/miele/

A total of 10 teams will be playing at the Miele League Challenge. Matches kickoff on Saturday, July 26th with the mid-season leaders from the ICTA Mixed Majors. Last year’s finalist, Unionville will take on newcomer Credit Valley with six matches to be played from 9:00 a.m. to noon. On Sunday, July 27 teams from the Toronto Ladies League (TLTL) and the Toronto Men’s League (TMTL) hit the courts from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will play a total of 15 matches giving fans lots of great tennis to cheer on. There will be an awards ceremony on both days at centre stage after the last match of the morning is completed.

The TLTL have entered the top two teams from the A1 Daytime Division, Leaside vs. Donalda. The top two teams from the TLTL Premier Evening Division were decided by the last match of the season that saw the Toronto Lawn defeating Kew Gardens 4-0. Kew’s defeat secured Banbury’s finish as the second place team. Banbury will now compete against perennial Premier Division winner, Toronto Lawn, who came close to a near perfect season record, losing only one doubles match all season.

The TMTL recently completed playoffs for the A1 and A2 divisions and will send the winner and finalist to play in the Miele League Challenge. In the A2 division, Trinity will take on Kew Gardens, with Kew “looking forward to a rematch at the Rogers Cup” after their 3-1 loss in the finals of the playoffs. The Men’s A1 match will showcase the top two teams from Granite and another team from Kew Gardens.
