The Birth of a Canadian National League System
Many tennis nations have successful national league systems, including the super-sized USTA League Tennis program or the interclub leagues so popular throughout Europe. Tennis Canada has long wanted a national league system and as a result of the generous support from Miele Limited, in 2008 the Miele League Challenge was born. The long term vision of the Miele League Challenge is to grow a national league system that provides Canadian league tennis players with an opportunity to compete for their province at a national level. In 2009, Tennis Canada and Miele Limited we will continue to promote league tennis across the country (see above) and lay the foundation for the future. The 2010 year will showcase the inaugural Miele League Challenge National Championship. Women's and men's teams, each comprised of two doubles positions and one singles position, will be encouraged to participate in regional qualifiers organized by Tennis Canada and their provincial tennis association partners. Regional winners will have an opportunity to compete for a national league title to be played in Toronto. In this first year, the national championship will include teams at the 3.5 playing level, with other playing levels added in subsequent years until all levels are represented.
