The Lighter Side of Tennis
While scrolling through the literally thousands of photos taken of league play this season, the writer of this newsletter felt it was now time for a peek at the lighter side of tennis. For those of you who went for a shot this season and ended up showing off parts of yourself normally reserved for the privacy of your home, this final article is written in your honour. Yes, Tennis Canada’s Ambassadors discovered league players do let it all hang out on the court. We caught your wipe outs, your lunges, the wiffs and those ahhh… rolls. We have shots of grimaces, mouths open, tongues out, closed eyes and even the occasional temper tantrum. However, we have many more photos of determination and grace, beautiful form and people doing anything to get to the ball. We also have shots of hugs and smiles, class and style, and the arm across the net around the shoulders of opponents. We may not always look stunning on the court, yet we are out there playing the game we love. Thank you for sharing your tennis stories with us. It has been a privilege to meet and write about you all summer long.

Share Your Feedback
Tell us what you thought of the first season of the Miele League Challenge. The three leagues that participated, ICTA, TLTL and the TMTL, have met with Tennis Canada and shared what they loved about year one: the coaching clinics, the great stories about people they know, the chance for their teams to play during the Rogers Cup with umpires and scoreboards and the recognition from Tennis Canada and the OTA for local league tennis. They also shared what can be improved for next year: more giveaways, fewer newsletters so they have a chance to read one before the next one arrives, a place for participants to shower and please…no 7:30 a.m. arrival time for matches. We want to improve this program. If you loved being part of the Miele League Challenge this summer or if you have an opinion on what we can do better send an email to:MIELE LEAGUE CHALLENGE@tenniscanada.com.

Toronto Ladies League Wrap up their Season with Style
“I almost didn’t recognize you,” was the comment frequently heard, as the ladies mingled during cocktail hour at the TLTL year-end banquet. Out of their usual match attire, these ladies certainly enhanced the beautiful setting for the evening’s festivities, the historic Donalda Club. During the scrumptious meal the TLTL executive presented awards to the division winners and allowed lucky ticket holders to choose from an array of cool prizes. Julie Staples, director of community development for Tennis Canada, presented the president of the Ladies League, Liz Wood, with a cheque for $2,500 made out to the Doug Philpott Foundation. The cheque was in appreciation of the Ladies League’s support for the inaugural year of the Miele League Challenge. Both Tennis Canada and the TLTL are long time supporters of Philpott, a charity that provides tennis programs for inner city children.
Miele League Challenge Contest Winners
The draw for the Miele League Challenge contest took place at the Tennis Canada offices on Monday, September 8, 2008. Congratulations to the grand prize winner, Haig Saadetian, who now gets to take nine friends or family to dinner prepared by a chef at the fabulous Miele showroom. Haig will also receive more VIP treatment by enjoying a suite at the 2009 Rogers Cup in Toronto. The second place prize of a Miele dishwasher will be delivered to the home of Barbara Peters, captain of the ICTA Ladies League Unionville A team. A delighted Barb says, “This is so unexpected.” Pamela Lawrie-Fisher is thrilled to be taking home the third prize of a Miele vacuum. Congratulations to our winners and thanks to everyone who entered the contest!
