Françoise Abanda came from a set down to pull through her second round match on Wednesday night at the National Bank Cup presented by IGA to advance to her first WTA quarter-final in Quebec City.
The 20-year-old pulled through 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 over fifth-seeded American Varvara Lepchenko two hours, 20 minutes of play. Abanda won 76% of her first serve points and was able to break Lepchenko’s serve on three occasions, including twice in the third set.
Abanda will face third-seeded Timea Babos of Hungary in the quarter-finals on Friday. Fourth-seeded German Tatjana Maria and American qualifier Caroline Dolehide also advanced to the final eight on Wednesday.
Canadian Bianca Andreescu and top-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova will headline Thursday’s evening session at PEPS.
