It was good day for Bianca Andreescu at the Citi Open in Washington.
The 17-year-old Canadian became the youngest Canadian since Maureen Drake in 1988 to win a main draw match at a WTA event on Monday thanks to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Italy’s Camila Giorgi, ranked no. 83 in the world.
Andreescu made her WTA main draw debut at Wimbledon after playing her way through qualifying at the All England Club, but was beaten in the opening round. In round two, Andreescu awaits the winner of the match between Tatjana Maria of Germany and second-seeded Kristina Mladenovic of France.
For their part, Francoise Abanda and Vasek Pospisil were both defeated in their first round matches on Monday. Third-seeded Milos Raonic will begin his tournament against Nicolas Mahut of France after receiving a first round bye.
