Bianca Andreescu is the champion at the Sooner Open in Norman, Oklahoma, defeating 16-year-old Maria Camila Osorio Serrano by a dominant 6-1, 6-0 scoreline.
After dropping the first set of her tournament in a tight tiebreak, Andreescu wouldn’t lose another, running off ten sets in a row (only one of which went as far as 7-5) to assert her mastery over the ITF25k field. The win caps off an impressive run of 18 wins to just three losses over the past two months in what has become a successful return from a back injury that saw her miss a full month of her 2018 season.
The title in Norman should put Andreescu just outside the Top 150 in the WTA rankings, only a few places off her career best ranking of World No. 143, achieved last season after the Canadian became the first player born in the 2000’s to reach a WTA quarter-final.
With little to defend at the start of next season and with all the momentum on her side, the 18-year-old from Mississauga is primed to make a run at the Top 100, the next step in what is sure to be an outstanding career for her.
