After a lop-sided opening set, Bouchard quickly found her footing in the second set and was able to earn an early break lead over her Chinese opponent, who mid-way through the set began experiencing back pains. The Chinese battled back from a break deficit to leave the set at 5-5 when Bouchard was serving to take the match into a decider, but the Canadian maintained focus and was able to recover her break lead. She served out the second set 7-5 at the second time of asking.
Bouchard then broke to begin the third set and held her next service game before Zhu retired from the match with a back injury.
Bouchard will now play Romania’s Ana Bogan in the second round.
