The dream run continued on Friday night in Washington as Canada’s Genie Bouchard and Florida’s Sloane Stephens rolled into the doubles final at the Citi Open.

Bouchard, who holds a doubles ranking of no. 584, and Stephens, ranked no. 404 in doubles, upset top seeds Sania Mirza and Monica Niculescu in the Citi Open semifinals 1-6, 7-5, 10-8. This is the first time Bouchard and Stephens have teamed up.

This season both Bouchard and Stephens respectively have had one win in doubles play prior to this week (Bouchard 1-3 record, Stephens 1-2). Citi Open marks both of their first career appearance in a WTA-level doubles final. They will now face no. 2 seeds Shuko Aoyama and Renata Voracova in the final on Saturday afternoon. This is not the first time a Canadian-American duo has found success in their first tournament together – Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock at Wimbledon!

In singles action, the last Canadian standing was eliminated as 17-year-old Bianca Andreescu fell to Andrea Petkovic 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2 in just over two hours. Andreescu was playing in her first WTA main draw and pulled off big upsets over Camila Giorgi and world no. 14 Kristina Mladenovic before encountering Petkovic.

Andreescu will travel home to Toronto next and participate in Rogers Cup as a main draw wildcard. Action kicks off Monday August 7.
