Canada’s junior Fed Cup team of Leylah Annie Fernandez, Layne Sleeth, and Alexandra Vagramov finished fourth at the Junior Fed Cup finals in Budapest, Hungary on Sunday.

Canada qualified for the championship group after upsetting no. 3 ranked Russia 2-1 to finish atop their pool which also featured Hungary and Thailand. In Saturday’s semifinals, the Canadian team lead the United States 1-0 thanks to a 6-4, 7-5 victory for Fernandez over Caty McNally, but they ultimately fell in the third and decisive doubles match. In Sunday’s 3-4 playoff against Ukraine, Canada once again split the two singles matches thanks to a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win for Vagramov over Daria Snigur. But, Fernandez and Sleeth came up short in doubles, falling 6-3, 7-6(6) to junior world no. 3 Marta Kostyuk and Alina Tsyurpalevych.

This is the second time in three years that Canada’s junior Fed Cup team has finished in the top 4.

For their part, the Canadian junior Davis Cup team of Justin Boulais, Nick Lagaev, and Alex-Antoine Marquis finished 15th in the world.
