From April 26 to 28, some of our best Canadian junior players will be participating in the Junior Davis Cup / Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas and the ITF World Junior Team Competition qualifying events being held in Mexico. Canada is competing for a place in the finals at both of these events.

Between 14 and 16 years of age is such a critical period in a young player’s development. These events provide an opportunity for these athletes to experience a team environment in competitive circumstances.

The selection process for Team Canada is based on Indoor Junior Nationals results, which took place earlier this year in March and April.

As action gets underway today, here’s what you need to know about these events:

Junior Davis Cup / Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas

The ITF’s International Team Competition for players aged 16 and under was launched in 1985 but was only given the name Junior Davis Cup / Junior Fed Cup in 2002. While the terms Davis Cup and Fed Cup may be familiar to some, their junior equivalents are not as mainstream.

Format:

  • Competition is open to all member nations of the ITF
  • Regional qualifying rounds take place throughout the year
  • 16 teams (of both boys and girls) emerge from regional qualifying to compete in finals
  • Finals take place during the course of a week in September

Canada’s past results:

  • Junior Davis Cup: finalists in 2010 and 2016, champions in 2015
  • Junior Fed Cup: finalists in 2003, 2004 and 2011

2015 Junior Davis Cup team: Denis Shapovalov, Félix Auger-Aliassime and Benjamin Sigouin.

2018 Team Canada:

  • Leylah Annie Fernandez
    • Canada’s highest ranked junior player (currently world no. 20 in the junior rankings)
    • Won a Grade A ITF junior tournament in February
  • Jada Bui
    • 2018 champion at the U16 Indoor Junior Nationals
  • Rachel Hanford
    • 2018 finalist at the U16 indoor Junior Nationals
  • Joshua Lapadat
    • 2018 champion at the U16 Indoor Junior Nationals
  • Samuel Paquette
    • 2018 finalist at the U16 Indoor Junior Nationals

ITF World Junior Team Competition

This event was launched in 1991 as an International Team Competition for players aged 14 and under.

Format:

  • Competition is open to countries from around the world
  • Regional qualifying rounds take place throughout the year
  • 16 teams (of both boys and girls) emerge from regional qualifying to compete in finals
  • Finals take place during the course of a week in August
