Three Canadians reached the second round of Australian Open qualifying on Tuesday night in Melbourne with Frank Dancevic, Peter Polansky, and Vasek Pospisil posting opening victories at the first Grand Slam of 2018.
Dancevic came back to defeat Spaniard Adrian Menendez-Macieras, seeded no. 18 in qualifying, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 and will face Duck Hee Lee of Korea on Thursday night. Polansky was a 7-6(2), 6-4 winner over Joao Domingues and will next meet American Christian Harrison. For his part, Pospisil beat Italy’s Lorenzo Giustino 7-5, 7-6(5) to set a second round meeting with another Italian in Stefano Napolitano. Filip Peliwo and Brayden Schnur were both defeated in their opening matches.
Meanwhile the three Canadian ladies in Aussie Open qualies now know their first round opponents and will take to the court in Melbourne. Françoise Abanda will go up against Jia-Jing Lu of China, Bianca Andreescu will take on Romania’s Alexandra Dulgheru, and Carol Zhao will meet Czech Denisa Allertova.
In Auckland last night, Juan Martin Del Potro exacted his revenge on Denis Shapovalov, defeating the Canadian 6-2, 6-4 in the second round after falling to the Canadian at Rogers Cup in Montreal last summer.
