Jabeur, who made the third round at Roland Garros earlier this summer, was struggling will illness and unable to complete the match. Zhao was able to play a consistent, aggressive game against her struggling opponent to secure the win in 55 minutes.
Zhao will now play no. 8 seed Danka Kovinic (MNE) in the semifinals. It will be the pair’s first meeting. Kovinic began her week in Vancouver with a victory over Bianca Andreescu. The winner of their semifinal will face either Maryna Zanevska (BEL) or Jana Fett (CRO) in Sunday’s final.
In men’s action, Brayden Schnur was eliminated by no. 2 seed Jordan Thompson in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. American rising star Taylor Fritz was also eliminated in his quarterfinal match after falling to Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2.
