The U12 Indoor Junior Nationals finals took place on Friday in Calgary. The girls’ finalists were both members of Tennis Ontario while the boys’ final opposed British Columbia and Quebec.
The girls’ final opposed the tournament’s top two seeds in Scarlett Nicholson (No. 1) and Anastasia Kavounov (no. 2), both players who had yet to lose a set in the competition prior to Friday. After dropping the first set on Friday, Nicholson rallied to even out the score and force a third set. The No. 1 seed was dominant in the decider, taking home the title over her fellow Ontario native by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Finishing in third was Nawal Issam Youssef who upset the third seed Anna-Raphaëlle Serghi in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
On the boys’ side, it was a battle between Danny Yassine of British Columbia and Kuang Qing Xu of Quebec on Friday. After easing through their quarter-finals matches, both players experienced more difficulties in the semi-finals, but ultimately prevailed to book their spot in the final. In Friday’s championship match, it was Yassine who got the better of the Quebec native 6-3, 6-1. Yassine was also crowned champion earlier this year at the 2018 Davis Trading Junior Indoor Provincial Championships in British Columbia. Dennis Bao, also of Tennis BC, finished in third thanks to a 7-6(2), 6-3 win over his fellow Tennis BC member Matthew Jaroslaw Dubas.
It was a title sweep for Nicholson and Yassine this week in Calgary as they were both crowned doubles champions as well. Nicholson teamed up with Kavounov as the tournament’s top seeds and took home the title in a dominant performance over the second seeds. The duo of Yassine and Bao, the third seeds, won the boys’ doubles title.
