CANADA COMPLETES DOMINANT SWEEP OF FED CUP ZONAL EVENT IN MONTREAL

Home team earns coveted berth in World Group II playoff in April

The Miele Canadian Fed Cup team more than lived up to their favourites billing, imposing their will yet again on Saturday at the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group I tie in Montreal. Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, Quebec), Sharon Fichman (Toronto), Valérie Tétreault (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, Quebec) claimed top honours at the event thanks to a convincing 3-0 win over Paraguay in the championship tie, thus earning a coveted berth in a World Group II playoff in April.

Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, Quebec) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, Quebec) lost a total of two games combined en route to masterful singles victories. Dubois, ranked No. 118 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings, disposed of Veronica Cepede Royg 6-0, 6-1 while Wozniak, ranked a career-high No. 32 in the world, was a 6-1, 6-0 victor over Rossana De Los Rios, ranked No. 95.

In the three doubles matches they contested this week, Canada lost only three games, posting five consecutive 6-0 sets thanks to the inspired play of Dubois and Fichman who were teaming up for the first time in Fed Cup play. In the nine sets they played, the Miele Canadian Fed Cup team dropped a mere 14 games, further accentuating the squad's utter domination of their opponents.

"I am so proud of the girls, they wanted so much to play well at home and they certainly did," captain Rene Collins beamed after her squad clinched the win. "I wanted them to play aggressive and take advantage of the fast courts, so I couldn't be more thrilled with the result."
