We will see another round of the Rogers Cup this week in Rome for Dednis Shapovalov, but this time against Rafael Nadal.

Less than a week after battling his opponent in the 2017 Rogers Cup, Alexander Zverev, in the semifinals of the Madrid Open Mutua, the 19-year-old will cross the line with the man put him on the spot in Montreal last year. The surprising victory in three rounds of Shapovalov at the expense of the legendary Spaniard was obviously the story of the Rogers Cup and his career at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament had propelled him into the Top 100 and the had placed on the radar amateurs and experts.

Setting the table for this recovery against Nadal, however, was not easy at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

Shapovalov had to win a titanic match against Robin Haase in the second round, beating the Dutchman 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5) and 6-3 after a two-hour, 26-minute battle. Haase used his ruse and his exceptional clay-court drive to force the Canadiens to make mistakes, but the new Top 30 member finally managed to master his game and cross the finish line to get the chance to compete. in Nadal in the third round.

The majority of the game was played under the terms of the future Canadian number one, while he was mistreating his rival from the end line and finished the points at the net. He performed his game plan very well in the initial heat, but his concentration – and perhaps his energy – failed him in the second act. However, Shapovalov, who takes a liking to victory, managed to bounce back to the final round and seal the outcome of the match with a winning service.

At the end of the match, the young Canadian’s statistics showed 42 winning strokes and 62 straight fouls as well as 13 points out of 20 at the net. He will probably have to put his game in order if he wants to repeat his feat of the Rogers Cup against Nadal, but in any case, Thursday’s duel will be electric.
