High-Intensity Interval Training: fit only faster

A new year is about to begin. It’s time to let go of what could have been, should have been, and wasn’t… and to focus on what will be. So many people struggle to find time for exercise, probably because we tend to over-complicate it. To do away with this mindset, stop viewing exercise as a chore and start seeing it as a privilege and an opportunity to have some fun.

As a fitness instructor of over 25 years and a former trainer, I’m a big fan of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Why? Because interval training helps us get fit faster and is an especially good way to train for those who are short on time.

High Intensity Interval Training combines periods of intense exercise with low intensity recovery periods. HIIT workouts burn more calories during and after working out than do continuous endurance workouts and participants can get a great workout in as short as 20-30 minutes.

A 2013 study published in The Journal of Physiology found High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) can be more effective at boosting health and cardiovascular fitness than regular endurance training. Many people find exercising this way more fun than regular endurance training – just take a well-choreographed spin class that offers plenty of HIIT intervals and you’ll likely not only enjoy your workout, but emerge feeling happier, healthier and eager for the next one.

I incorporate HIIT into my runs, running at a comfortable pace for a few minutes, sprinting for a few minutes, and repeating the pattern. Try this method of training in the pool, while walking, and even while rallying on the courts.
