ROSIE JOHANSON CAPTURES ITF JUNIOR TITLE
March 2, 2013
British Columbia’s Rosie Johanson captured her first ITF junior title on Saturday, defeating American Meghan Kelley 7-5, 6-3 in the final to win the Copa Universidad Galileo, a hard-court Grade 4 tournament in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
In just her third career ITF junior tournament, the 14-year-old capped off a very successful week by playing a strong match in the final. She earlier had clinched two qualifying contests to earn a spot in the main draw, then eliminated the event’s No. 2 seed, Maddie Pothoff of the United States, in the first round.
Johanson trains at the Global Tennis Academy in Coquitlam, BC with coach Dimitri Penchev. Also a member of Tennis Canada’s BC national junior training program, Johanson played her first ITF junior tournament a couple weeks ago in Mexico, where she reached the semifinals as a qualifier. The following week in El Salvador, she fell in her final qualifying match, before regrouping to impressively take her maiden ITF title in Guatemala.
