Rebecca Marino’s comeback to tennis couldn’t have started any better. The 27-year-old native of Vancouver won her third consecutive title and 17th straight match on Sunday morning at the $15,000 GD Tennis Cup in Antalya, Turkey.
Marino defeated seventh-seeded Gaia Sanesi of Italy, ranked no. 447 in the world, 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match. Marino also beat Sanesi last week in the quarter-finals.
During her 17 match win streak, Marino has lost just one set, in Saturday’s semifinals to the top seed and world no. 325 Ekaterine Gorgodze of Georgia en route to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Thanks to her title trifecta, Marino, who did not have a WTA ranking three weeks ago, will now be ranked around no. 630. She will now play one more event in Antalya this week then head home before going to Japan for her next series of tournaments.
