Setsuko Pye, captain for the InterCounty A team, “the food theme for next week gets much more discussion than the lineup.” They don’t even have a kitchen on site; items are heated with appliances like pizza ovens or panini makers found at yard sales! These Green Mamas were recently profiled in an article by Parvaneh Perssian as they refuse to use any disposable products and take dishes and linens home to be washed and collect all food waste for the compost. According to Katharine du Quesnay, the initiator of Whitby’s tennis luncheon green movement, “there rarely is any food that gets disposed of since everyone eats up everything on their plates! A true sign of compliments to the chef wouldn't you say?”
Whitby TC is a rapidly growing club with a huge appetite for tennis. League teams abound at all ages and levels and the demand for courts far outweigh supply. No wonder! With commitment like this, Whitby TC truly goes the extra mile to “celebrate everyone’s game.”
Kew Squared
Kew Gardens TC is located in the heart of Toronto’s beaches community and is an active supporter of league tennis with a total of 19 teams in the InterCounty, Toronto Men’s, Toronto Ladies and Toronto Junior Doubles leagues. Kew is also home to some of the GTA’s hottest players and many were on display for an annual league event dubbed “Kew Night.” Club supporters come out to eat, laugh and cheer as their Men’s A1 team plays the “other” Men’s A1 team and the ICTA Mixed Majors play at home, this year against a newly formed team from Ontario Racquet Club. Headlining the night’s entertainment was the Court 1 match up for the Toronto Men’s League that saw Ben Woo and Brian Draxl taking on the man with the giant serve; Al Miller and his partner, Adam Baranowski. A three-set classic worthy of Kew Night, the match lasted just over three hours, provided many oohs, ahs and outbursts of applause from appreciative fans and ended in a 7-5 victory for Kew 1’s Woo and Draxl. The winner of the Toronto Men’s A1 division will earn a trip to Rogers Cup presented by National Bank to play against a Montreal team from the Ligue Nationale de Tennis du Québec on August 15.

This Montreal Team is Up to the Challenge!
On August 22, the gold medal Level IIA winners representing the Tennis Féminin Interclub Montréal (TFIM) will play a showcase match against the winners of the Toronto Ladies League A1 Day Division. Founded in 1978, TFIM runs a fantastically successful winter league that includes four levels of play over 20 weeks, followed by four rounds of seeded playoffs that culminate in a fun-filled day of hotly contested medal matches. The Nuns’ Island Tennis Club welcomed over 500 players and fans to the final event that took place on April 24 and the host club gave the teams the true red carpet treatment. Players were given valet parking so they could step out and stroll down the red carpet while posing for a professional photographer. Then it was on to the business at hand …playing for gold! Everyone appreciated the excellent lunch and loads of cool door prizes. According to TFIM President Thea Puchois “it was team Nuns' Island IIA that walked off with the honours and thanks to Tennis Canada, will travel to Toronto this summer to represent TFIM in the Miele League Challenge that will be held during Rogers Cup. Nuns Island IIA is captained by Mary Sambrook and they claim they are totally “up for the Challenge!” Mary and her gold medal team are so excited they have already chosen their players and booked themselves off for the finals weekend in Toronto!
