Our Nation’s Capital is a Thriving Tennis City

With 143 busy public courts and an outstanding selection of private facilities, Ottawa, Ontario and the neighbouring city of Hull, Quebec is a veritable tennis mecca. Leading the charge for tennis leagues and tournaments is the National Capital Tennis Association (NCTA). Run by an exceptional volunteer board, the NCTA organizes teams from member clubs into singles and doubles leagues in both summer and winter, allowing more than 600 players to participate in organized league tennis. Sean Sweeney, Vice-President, is excited about teams from Ottawa joining the Miele League Challenge in 2010 and is actively spreading the word to current league players, encouraging them to sign up for the newsletter and enter the online contest. Next year will be a big year for tennis in Ottawa as the region celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Men’s Singles Tournament, the oldest tournament of its kind in Canada.

A Global Sport has Global Needs – Great Volunteers!

Johnnie Avanesyanne moved to Canada from Armenia in 1984. An avid tennis player since childhood, he kept up his tennis interests by playing and volunteering in neighbourhood clubs. In 2003, he joined the Richmond Hill Lawn Tennis Club (RHLTC) and found his tennis “home and family.” Since then, Johnnie has become indispensable as a court monitor, event volunteer and groundskeeper. Endless hours are spent keeping the courts, clubhouse and grounds in tip-top shape. “I couldn’t survive without him,” claims President Steve Wong.

Steve is another amazing presence at RHLTC. He truly loves the game of tennis and sees the value in promoting it for all levels of play. He modeled their house league after the ICTA Mixed League, where they play in teams and captains are in charge of line-ups. It has been so successful that they have 168 players signed up and have had to run the league on two different nights. Their 11 ICTA teams are running strong, with a couple in contention to make playoffs. Past President, Flaviu Dinca, who co-captains with Steve for the Mixed A team, noted that they have a “C team that is very excited to compete for a top spot at Rexall Centre in September!”

Johnnie has taken Steve’s influence to heart, and promotes tennis and an active lifestyle to all, from junior camps to senior programs. “I learned from Steve,” he says.

Keeping stainless steel appliances clean at all times can be difficult. Typically a specialty stainless steel cleaning product is required for the best results and even then it is costly and time consuming. At Miele, we offer solutions that allow you to truly enjoy your investment for many years to come, that’s why we introduced CleanTouch Steel. CleanTouch Steel is high grade stainless steel that can be cleaned with just soap and water, no specialty cleaners required and it also hides everyday marking such as fingerprints. Inter-Provincial Rivalry Heats Up for Rogers Cup Match in Montreal

The teams are almost set for the first inter-provincial matches of the Miele League Challenge. Montreal’s La Ligue Nationale de Tennis Interieur (LNTI) first and second place teams are combining to play against the winner of the Toronto Men’s League (TMTL) A1 division on Saturday, August 15 at Rogers Cup in Montreal.

LNTI team Repentigny/Momentum beat Tennis 13 by a score of 2-1 with the winner decided by a nail biter of a doubles match. Encouraged by the news of the Miele League Challenge, the LNTI was created last year with support from the Quebec Tennis Federation. Frederic Ledoux, Technical Director, tells us that "the teams are really happy to be involved with Rogers Cup and are proud to represent Quebec in what will definitely be a highly competitive match against Toronto.” Quebec’s team will challenge the winner of a final playoff match between long established TMTL teams from Toronto Lawn Tennis Club and Tournament Park.
