Canada’s Largest Tennis League Showcases Matches in Toronto
On Sunday, August 23 beginning at 9:30 a.m., both juniors and adults from Canada’s largest tennis league, the InterCounty Tennis Association (ICTA), will be showcased in a series of matches played in the four hours prior to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour finals. Selected matches will be webcast live at www.tenniscanada.com/miele.Two Junior Mixed Majors teams have won their way to Rogers Cup and will play their championship match complete with umpires and scoreboards! This league plays the exciting World Team Tennis (WTT) format which plays boys and girls’ singles and doubles followed by a set of mixed doubles. WTT rules allows for coaching and mid-set substitutions while counting each game won to determine the winner. Setsuko Pye, the ICTA Junior Mixed Majors coordinator, says “this is truly a David meets Goliath championship final.” The east division winning team from Wanless Park had not won a match prior to this year and will play the west division winner from Erin Mills, who happen to be the ICTA 2008 Tournament Champions.
In the adult matches, four ICTA A Mixed teams have qualified to play a modified format that honours the ladies aspect of this year’s Rogers Cup. Tournament Park will play Richmond Hill Lawn TC whereas Hillcrest TC will play Brampton TC for two championship titles. Both matches are comprised of one ladies doubles and two mixed doubles lines and the players will have officials and scoreboards to give the day a “tour professional” feel.
For grounds passes to Sunday’s showcase league matches please go to the ICTA website.

On July 27, 14-year-old Daniel Tsimerman, a league tennis player for the Boulevard Club, had the opportunity to step onto the court against the most decorated tennis player this country has ever seen.
“I was both excited and nervous to play against Daniel Nestor,” expressed the teenager that possesses a smile slightly brighter than his curly red hair. “This is an amazing opportunity for me and I have the Miele League Challenge to thank.”
Fans flocked to the Rosethorn tennis courts in Etobicoke to see the Miele League Challenge spokesperson and five-time Grand Slam winner compete as a participant in a league match for the Rosethorn Tennis Club. Prior to the match, Nestor held a children's tennis clinic with the club pro and chatted with spectators.
A brief shower fell on the courts but it was short-lived and soon a picturesque rainbow looked over the players as they fought hard during the opening set before reality set in for all involved. In the end, the veteran and his partner, Tristan D'Cunha, came out on top 7-6, 6-1, but the score didn’t matter to the approximately 100 in attendance who were able to be up close and personal with a world champion.
“The InterCounty Tennis Association, and other leagues like it around the country, are a great way to grow the sport and get more people involved with league tennis,” said Nestor during his media scrum Monday night. “Jan Heck, president of Miele, brought his passion for league play over from Germany, where just about anyone who plays tennis – from juniors to professionals - is part of a league. Next year, the Miele League Challenge will grow to a national level by incorporating a national league championship.”
The story of young Daniel Tsimerman took on a life of its own as the national media called to hear the great connection between the two Daniels (who have a coach in common) and the Miele League Challenge. CBC Newsworld featured the two athletes on that evening followed by a live segment on Canada AM the next morning. The media attention the Miele League Challenge has garnered will certainly bring more people to the courts, which is the ultimate goal of the program.
Nestor, who will look to defend his Rogers Cup title with Tour partner Nenad Zimonjic in Montreal mid-August, put a spotlight on a small community who will forever remember the special visit.
“I’ll remember these two days for the rest of my life,” added Tsimerman.
Mission accomplished for the people at Miele Limited.

Decade of Drought Ends
“I’ve played for this club for 10 years and I’ve never won the league,” stated the tired, relieved yet genuinely thrilled captain from the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, Garett Prins. Rain had forced the TMTL Men’s A1 final indoors and tensions were high. Large numbers of vocal fans followed, despite the change of time and location, and all were treated to an evening of high level tennis. The Lawn played against Tournament Park, another newcomer to the A1 finals, and knowing a trip to Rogers Cup in Montreal was on the line definitely increased the drama of the day. The majority of the players had played college tennis at some point with one, a young pro recently hired at the Lawn named Stefan D’Almeida, having played two Davis Cup matches for his native Zimbabwe in 2006. Garett and Stefan were the only loss of the day for the Lawn, going down in three sets in a highly entertaining match to Josh Borenstein and Lance Cohen on court one. That extra set sealed the deal for the Lawn as Court 2 and 3 had each won in 2 sets. A major relief for the men in the extended battle on Court 4! The Lawn will play their Miele League Challenge showcase match against the combined teams of Repentigny/Momentum and Tennis 13 from Montreal’s La Ligue Nationale de Tennis Interieur (LNTI) at Rogers Cup in Montreal on Saturday, August 15 at 10:00 a.m.
