The 2019 Under 18 Rogers Outdoor Junior Nationals came to a close last weekend with winners crowned in boy’s and girl’s singles and doubles events. Taking place on the courts of Ontario Racquet Club in Mississauga, Ontario, the tournament saw top-seed Joshua Lapadat of Ontario claim the boy’s singles title and Mia Kupres (No. 3) of Alberta win the girl’s singles.

The boy’s singles final was an all-Ontario event as Lapadat took on Ilya Tiraspolsky (No. 5), who were also partners in doubles. Despite not losing a single set en route to the final, Tiraspolsky was unable to repeat his quarter-final upset of third seed Marko Stakusic against Lapadat. In a dominant display, Lapadat, who had beaten third seed Nick Lagaev 7-6(4), 6-4 in the semi-finals, came out on top thanks to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. In doubles, Lapadat and Tiraspolsky (No. 1) teamed up to claim the title. They were due to face Lagaev and Nicolas Ocana-Lavoie in the final but the No. 2 seeds defaulted.

There was an upset in the girl’s singles final as Kupres (No. 3) defeated top seed Sarah-Maude Fortin of Quebec. Kupres had already beaten Daria Tomashevskaya (No. 5) 6-3, 6-2 in the quarter-finals and Corina Spasojevic (No. 2) 7-6(2), 7-6(6) in the semi-finals. She needed just two sets to complete her title victory, claiming a 6-4, 6-3 win over Fortin in the final.

Fortin did experience success in the girl’s doubles event, though, as she teamed up with Spasojevic of Ontario. Having beaten third-seeded Kristen Borland and Rachel Hanford 4-6, 7-6(1), [10-6] in the semi-finals, the duo took on Grace Haugen and Alexandra Nielsen (No. 5) in the final. There, the top seeds made no mistake on their way to claiming the title as they downed their opponents by way of a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
