The ITF Super Seniors World Team Championships have concluded in Umag, Croatia after an exciting week of seniors tennis. Canada sent seven strong teams to compete in the eight age categories, and once again found success on the international stage.
The over-80 women captured the best result of all Canadian teams in competition in Umag. The Doris Hart Cup team took home the bronze. Canada’s 3-0 victory over France on Saturday guaranteed their top-three finish in the group.
Muffie Grieve defeated France’s Marielle Gallay 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 to establish the early lead in the tie. Then, Inge Weber beat Odile Niox Chateau 6-0, 6-2 to secure the win. Grieve and Weber teamed up to take the doubles rubber over Mireille Giraud and Sabine Leflaive 6-2, 6-1. The Doris Hart Cup team, comprised of Grieve, Weber, and Evelyn Hustwit, were undefeated in group action, winning all three ties and only dropping two sets.
The over-65 women in Kitty Godfree Cup action finished in seventh place in their competitive group. Paddy Mann, Jean Martin, and Jandi Fraser finished the tournament with a 2-1 play-off victory over Poland.
Three Canadian teams finished just inside the Top 10 of their respective rankings. The Jack Crawford Cup team locked up ninth place with its 3-0 win over Ireland on Saturday. Kenneth Dahl, Don McCormick, Bob Bardsley, Claude Savaria all combined to shut out Ireland to cap off the team competition.
The Althea Gibson Cup team’s ninth-place finish followed their 2-1 victory over Switzerland on Saturday. Mary Ann Gaskin, Eileen Clark, Gillian Akins, and Anne Rungi contributed with big wins throughout the past week in Croatia.
The Canadian Gardnar Mulloy Cup squad earned their ninth-place finish in the standings with a 2-1 win over Turkey. Lorne Main, Brahm Faber, Adrian Grice’s Top 10 finish came in an extremely competitive men’s over-80 group.
Canada’s Britannia Cup team, made up of Joe Forrayi, Lucien Desmarais, Allard Cote, Rosti Brankovsky, finished in 12th place in the men’s over-65 division. In the men’s over-75 Bitsy Grant Cup category, Horst Dammholz, Shaheer Mikhail, Ali Bacha, and Jay Bochner ended competition in 14th place.
