The Atlantic University Tennis League will host its opening tournament this weekend, November 24-26th, at the Cougar Dome in Truro, Nova Scotia.
Eight competitive teams will jockey for a good start to the 2017/18 season as they look to build momentum and earn seedings for the final Championships held in March 2018.
Dalhousie’s top team comes in as defending champions and fresh off of their inaugural trip to the Canadian University Tennis Championships this past summer. They were the first team to represent the Atlantic region at the nationals and they will look to leverage this experience in their matches this coming weekend.
League Convener, Mark Thibault, says that the league is excited to have a full eight-team draw for the tournament and will focus on getting more match play for the participants, “This year’s tournaments will feature compass draws where each team moves into a new bracket after every round, win or lose.” The teams will continue in play-off rounds until their final standing is determined.
The Atlantic league consists of two tournaments, held in November and January, that lead to a final Championships weekend in March. The winner of the Championship weekend will earn a berth to the Canadian University Tennis Championships in August held during Rogers Cup, the professional WTA and ATP events in Toronto and Montreal.
This weekend’s team match-ups will follow the World Team Tennis format of two men’s singles, two ladies singles, one men’s doubles, one ladies doubles and one mixed doubles. Play kicks off Friday night at 5pm. The Day 1 schedule is listed below and features all 8 participating teams.
