Félix Auger-Aliassime (Montréal, QC) and Filip Peliwo (Vancouver, BC) are the two Canadians in the quarterfinals of the Subaru Sherbrooke Futures presented by Rouge FM. The US$25 000 International Tennis Federation tournament will be underway until March 13 on the Christian Bourque indoor courts at the Rock Forest recreation centre in Sherbrooke.
Peliwo was first into the quarters with a two-set win (6-3 et 7-6(4)) over Alex Kuznetsov of the US, who took home the crown at the tournament in Gatineau last week. The victory qualifies the 22-year-old for his first quarterfinal since he took his third professional title in November in Great Britain. In the next round, Peliwo will face Edward Corrie of Great Britain.
Auger-Aliassime played the evening match against Daniel Smethurst, also of Great Britain. Smethurst is currently ranked no. 489 after rising as high as no. 234 in 2014. The Canadian got off to a terrific start by taking the first five games and triumphed in two easy sets (6-1, 6-2) in just 62 minutes. The 15-year-old won 84% of points on his first serve and did not give up any break points. He will also be playing in his first quarterfinal of the season versus qualifier Mico Santiago of the US.
Santiago joined the top eight after first seed Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) was forced to withdraw due to a right bicep injury. The 31-year-old Ontarian was just back from Guadeloupe after playing for Canada in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first-round battle against France.
