Peck defeats Muamba

Two of the five Canadians who played today at the Subaru Sherbrooke Futures found their way into the second round. The US $25 000 International Tennis Federation tournament will be underway until March 13 on the Christian Bourque indoor courts at the Rock Forest recreation centre in Sherbrooke.

Félix Auger-Aliassime (Montréal, QC) and Joshua Peck (Calgary, AB), who are both members of the National Tennis Centre, won their first-round matches. Auger-Aliassime surprised eighth seed Evan King of the US in three sets (6-3, 0-6, 6-4) after 1:38 of play. The 15-year-old Canadian, who is currently ranked no. 732 on the ATP Tour and no.12 on the Juniors Circuit, will be up against Daniel Smethurst of Great Britain for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Joshua Peck ousted countryman Nicaise Muamba (Gatineau, QC) in two sets (6-4, 7-6(5)). Peck fell in the last qualifying round but got a second chance when Christian Harrison of the US withdrew from the tournament. Today’s win is Peck’s second in the main draw of a professional tournament. In the second round, he will face Hugo Nys of France, who defeated second seed Germain Gigounon of Belgium.

The other young Canadians—Denis Shapovalov (Richmond Hill, ON) and Benjamin Sigouin (Vancouver, BC)—did not fare as well. Shapovalov fell to Justin S. Shane of the US (6-4, 6-4) and Sigouin fought and lost to fifth seed Eric Quigley of the US in three tough sets  (6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3).

Frank Dancevic

Tomorrow, Frank Dancevic of Ontario will headline the evening session at 6 p.m. He is just back from Guadeloupe after playing for Canada in the David Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first-round battle against France and will face Jack Minjie Lin (Markham, ON).
