After a rain delay halted play for much of Tuesday, Canadians Philip Bester and Gabriela Dabrowski advanced into the mixed doubles gold medal match at the TO2015 Pan Am Games. Bester and Dabrowski defeated Colombians Eduardo Struvay and Mariana Duque Marino in the semifinals at the Canadian Tennis Centre to assure themselves of a medal.
After dropping the first set to Struvay and Duque Marino – a past bronze medalist at the 2011 Pan Am Games – the Canadians bounced back, winning the match 4-6, 6-0, 10-3.

“My goal was to come and get a medal, a gold medal, and I couldn’t be happier to have an opportunity with Gaby,” said Bester. “We’re not done yet!”
In the gold medal match, Bester and Dabrowski will face either Maria Irigoyen and Guido Andreozzi of Argentina or Veronica Cepede and Diego Galeano of Paraguay on Centre Court on Wednesday.
Dabrowski was also victorious in women’s doubles, alongside partner Carol Zhao. The Canadians defeated Camila Giangreco and Montserrat Gonzalez of Paraguay in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to make the semifinals.
“We had a lot of fun out there with the home crowd. It was our first time playing together and I think it worked out pretty well,” said Zhao. “We are just trying to put ourselves in the best position possible to get a medal.”
Dabrowski and Zhao will next face either a team from the United States or Argentina on Wednesday.
Dabrowski’s two wins in doubles followed her loss in the women’s singles quarter-finals where she fell to Duque Marino in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Zhao also crashed out of the quarter-finals, falling to Victoria Rodriguez of Mexico 6-0, 6-4 on Tuesday.
Play will continue on Wednesday with the men’s gold medal match between Colombian Nicolas Barrientos and Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis opening day six on Centre Court. The tennis event of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will conclude on July 16 at the Canadian Tennis Centre.
