Eugenie Bouchard has reached the third round of the Qatar Total Open in Doha thanks to a 7-6(0), 7-5 victory over Czech Denisa Allertova on Tuesday.
Lasting 90 minutes, it was a close duel with each player earning 11 break opportunities – but Bouchard was able to clinch one more, going for seven-for-11, while Allertova broke Bouchard six times.
Next up for the 21-year-old Canadian, who will be turning 22 on Thursday, is the winner of No. 1 seed and Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber of Germany versus Chinese Zheng Saisai.
Over at the Dubai Duty Free Championships, Vasek Pospisil and partner Nenad Zimonjic were upset in the first round of doubles by Korean/Czech team Hyeon Chung and Jiri Vesely 6-4, 6-4. Pospisil is still in singles, and will face Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in the second round.
