Genie Bouchard is quarter-final bound in Taipei City after battling past Romania’s Ana Bogdan 7-5, 7-5.

Bouchard battled from a set down in her opening round to defeat Lin Zhu 1-6, 7-5, 2-0 (ret.) while Bogdan took out top seed Shuai Peng to book her spot in Thursday’s encounter.

Bouchard earned an early break in the match to jump ahead 2-1, but a series of back-to-back breaks followed. Neither player was able to hold serve. Bouchard had two opportunities to serve out the first set – she was broken the first time but then recovered her break advantage to serve out the set 7-5.

Into the second set, both players traded breaks of serve again. Bouchard earned a crucial break at 3-3 and consolidated to go up 5-3. She continued to pressure the Romanian’s service games and would earn more break opportunities, this time letting her break for the match, but Bogdan managed to hold.

Like in the first set, Bouchard was broken serving for the set – and match. The Canadian bounced back and was able to break Bogdan once more, making it her seventh break of the match, and this time Bouchard was able to serve it out.

Bouchard will now face Yafan Wang in her first quarter-final of the 2018 season on Friday.
