Eugenie Bouchard (Montreal) was upset in the opening round of Roland Garros on Tuesday, falling at the hands of Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-4.

After dropping the first set, Bouchard quickly lost the first five games of the second before reeling off four in a row to climb back into the match. But serving at 5-4, Mladenovic was finally able to clinch the victory. In total, Bouchard was broken five times and won just 48 per cent of points on her serve.

The loss was No. 6-seeded Bouchard’s first in the opening round of a major. She previously was 8-0.

Bouchard, who made the semifinals in Paris a year ago, is still trying to find the form that saw her reach two Slam semifinals and a final last year. Her current record on the 2015 season is 7-10.
