Eugenie Bouchard advanced to her first WTA semifinal since September of 2014 on Thursday at the Hobart International in Australia.
The 21-year-old Canadian defeated Italy’s Camila Giorgi 6-3, 6-2 under the lights on a rainy day in Hobart.
Bouchard sets up a U.S. Open rematch against Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in Friday’s semifinals. The two played a memorable match in New York last summer with Bouchard coming through in three tight sets to reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.
This is Bouchard’s first semifinal since Wuhan in 2014 where she finished the runner up to Petra Kvitova.
To help get play under way, Bouchard even pitched in to help dry the courts!
Meanwhile, Frank Dancevic, Heidi El Tabakh, Peter Polansky, and Aleksandra Wozniak were all defeated in the first round of Australian Open qualifying.
