Earlier in the day, Rebecca Marino managed to edge former World No. 12 Yanina Wickmayer in a tight 7-5, 7-5 affair in front of her home crowd. The win marks the Vancouverite’s second-best win over her inspirational comeback this season, having beaten then-World No. 69 Vera Lapko two weeks ago in Rogers Cup qualifying.
Marino took a prolonged absence from professional tennis following struggles with depression, but will return to well within the Top 200 if she’s able to claim the title this week. In the quarterfinals, the 27-year-old will face qualifier Martina Trevisan.
Vasek Pospisil, who also hails from British Colombia, also managed to reach the quarterfinals of his home-town event, recovering from a set down to defeat Marc Polmans 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
