Genie Bouchard has been eliminated from the US Open by Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina. The Canadian lost their first round encounter 7-6(2), 6-1 in one hour, 24 minutes.

The two exchanged holds of serve to begin the match. Rodina earned the first break in the third game after breaking Bouchard at 15. Bouchard broke back in the following game, rallying from 40-15 down to get even at 2-2. Bouchard would need to save another break point in her following service game before holding for 3-2.

The pair would trade breaks once again in the sixth and seventh games before drawing level at 4-4. Both women were battling to hold serve in this opening round match.

Into a first set tiebreak Bouchard pushed a backhand into the net to give Rodina the first mini break. A few points later Bouchard’s forehand sailed long of the baseline giving Rodina a 4-0 lead. On a return winner, Rodina took the opener 7-6(2) in 51 minutes.

As they did in the first set, the pair exchanged breaks of serve to begin the second. Rodina capitalized on a handful of errors off the Canadian’s racquet and went up a break at 3-1. The Russian, up 4-1, would benefit from Bouchard’s 43rd unforced error and break again.

Bouchard hit three consecutive errors in Rodina’s following service game, giving the Russian triple match point. Bouchard would save the first with a cross-court forehand winner but netted a backhand in the following point to end the match.

Bouchard finished the match with 26 winners to 46 unforced errors. She has not won a match at the US Open since defeating Dominika Cibulkova in 2015.

Bouchard’s US Open is not over yet. She will be teaming up with Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko in women’s doubles.
