As players and spectators begin to wrap up the clay court season from Roland Garros, the WTA has announced which clay matches were the best over the past two months. From the green clay in Charleston to the red dirt in Rome, five matches stood out from the rest.
Genie Bouchard’s three set thriller over Maria Sharapova at the Mutua Madrid Open ranks among the best clay matches of the 2017 season.
Check out their second round match highlights below.
Despite being the higher ranked player, Bouchard was a heavy underdog heading into the encounter against Sharapova. Bouchard had only won one set against Sharapova in their previous four meetings.
Luckily for Genie – that set was on clay at Roland Garros in 2014.
Both players put out stellar numbers in their second round meeting, but it was Bouchard who had the upper hand and ran away with a thrilling win. She took the match 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in just under three hours to earn her first victory over the 5-time Grand Slam champion.
The match witnessed 36 break point opportunities created (21 for Bouchard, 15 for Sharapova) and both players broke the other five times. Bouchard’s post-match comment perfectly summarizes this thriller: “We just battled our hearts out.”
