Canada’s Doris Hart Cup team remained undefeated through round-robin play at the ITF Super Seniors World Team Championships in Umag, Croatia on Wednesday, as the over-80 women brought down France 2-1 to finish in first place in group standings. They are now in a prime spot for the upcoming play-offs.
Evelyn Hustwit faced a tough competitor in France’s Marielle Gallay in the opening match, as Gallay beat Hustwit 6-4, 6-4. Inge Weber flipped the momentum when she cruised past Odile Niox Chateau 6-0, 6-1 to even up the tie at 1-1. Then, Weber and Muffie Grieve teamed up for the deciding doubles rubber against Mireille Giraud and Sabine Leflaive. Weber and Grieve posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over their French opponents to capture the tie and finish atop Group B. They continue their bid for a fifth championship in six years on Friday versus Great Britain.
The women’s over-70 Althea Gibson Cup team suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Great Britain. Mary Ann Gaskin provided Canada’s only win of the tie when she defeated Frances MacLennan 7-5, 7-6(6) in the second singles rubber. Play-offs begin on Thursday, and Canada faces off against Sweden to battle for a ninth-place finish.
Canada’s Kitty Godfree Cup team fell 3-0 to the United States on Wednesday. The over-65 women begin their fight for a fifth-place finish on Thursday versus New Zealand.
In Group B action of the Gardnar Mulloy Cup, Canada was defeated 2-1 by Australia. The only win for the over-80 men came in the doubles rubber. After falling short in their respective singles rubbers, Brahm Faber and Adrian Grice teamed up to defeat Australian duo Adrian Alle and Claude Wenzel 6-4, 6-3. The team competes on Thursday for a ninth-place result.
Canada’s Britannia Cup team couldn’t crack a tough French squad in their second round-robin tie on Wednesday in Umag. The over-65 men fell 3-0 to France. Canada can snag a seventh-place finish, and start the play-off round on Thursday versus Ukraine.
Both the men’s over-75 Bitsy Grant Cup and the over-70 Jack Crawford Cup teams did not play on Wednesday. They begin their play-off ties on Thursday.
