The Canadian University Tennis Championships kicked off on Friday in Toronto with some great results and closely contested matches. The tournament takes place annually in conjunction with Rogers Cup presented by National Bank bringing together the top university tennis athletes from coast to coast.
The day began with the Women’s draw featuring York University and the University of Montreal. The York team entered the matchup confident coming off of a successful year in which they went undefeated in the OUAS and earned an OUA title. University of Montreal has had success at the University Championships in the past, and were vying for their fifth title.
This Match Up proved to be incredibly close with York ultimately taking the tie over University of Montreal by a score of 5-2. York started off by winning two out of three doubles matches to claim one overall point towards the final score. Following two Singles losses, York kicked into high gear winning Singles matches three through six where Isabella Baston closed out a solid performance for York by defeating Zeljka Jurjevic by a score of 6-1, 6-0.

RESULT; York wins 5-2
The second Match Up in the Women’s draw pitted reigning champion University of Alberta against local power University of Toronto. This tie was closely contested but ultimately saw Alberta claim victory by a score of 4-3.
University of Toronto started off strong winning two out of three doubles matches to gain a crucial point for their team. Steffi Wong proved too strong for top player Britt Voaklander winning 6-4, 6-1 while sister Erika Voaklander won her match over U of T’s Jennifer Cape 6-2, 6-4. Singles proved to be a different story with Alberta roaring back to win four of six matches to take the tie.
York University will square off against University of Alberta on Sunday August 16th at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Toronto. Matches kick off at 10AM.
