Canada’s doubles teams saw success as play continued at the 2015 ITF Seniors World Individual Championships on Tuesday in La Baule, France. The Canadian team, sponsored by Miele, finished the third day of play with each doubles team advancing.
In the over-55 draw, Michelle Karis secured Canada’s lone singles win of the day when she defeated No. 13 seed Kim Reed in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. She will face No. 5 seed Irene Werneck of Brazil on Wednesday. Canadian Janet Bulger was ousted by Australian Wendy Armstrong 6-4, 6-4 in the women’s over-50 draw.
No. 6 seeds David Anderson and Marc Pepin continued their win streak in the men’s over-55 doubles. The Canadians defeated Jose Cobo and Jose A. Pereira in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.They will go head-to-head with Pascal Coudin and Paul Torre of France on Wednesday.
In their first match of the tournament, No. 4 seeds and two-time defending champions James Cameron and Keith Porter eliminated Boyd R. Brackstone and Alain Huszar 7-5, 6-1 to book their spot in the second round of the over-60 event. On Wednesday they face Wayne Cowley and Wayne Pascoe for a chance to advance to the quarter-finals. In the men’s over-50 doubles draw, Briton Rajiv Batra and Canadian Denis Dumas ousted Vittorio Busato and Andrew Sharp in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 10-8. They will meet Jacques Hervet and Franck Hervy in the next round on Wednesday.
Canadian Erin Boynton and her American partner Kathy Vick advanced to the quarter-finals in the women’s over-55 doubles. They ousted No. 7 seeds Betty Maitland and Kim Reed to set up a meeting with No. 1 seeds Ros Balodis and Leanne Swayland on Wednesday.
The men’s singles did not produce good results for the Canadians. Both Marc Pepin and Robert Exell fell in the third round in the over-55 men’s draw, while No. 4 Bruno Renoult of France defeated Canada’s Keith Porter 6-3, 6-3 in the men’s over-60 draw. It was no better in the over-50 draw, where No. 8 seed Denis Dumas and fellow Canadian Graham Watt were eliminated.
