Top-seeded players Daria Tomashevskaya and Ashton Cross both came through the U12 Rogers Indoor Junior National Championships on the winning side on Saturday, defeating their respective opponents in the girls’ and boys’ finals to claim national singles titles at the Tennis Academy in Calgary.
Tomashevskaya, from Ontario, defeated Melodie Collard of Quebec 6-4, 6-2 to win her first national singles title. She didn’t drop a set all tournament en route to the trophy.
Cross was challenged a bit more in his final, as he came back from a set down against Ontario’s Marko Stakusic for a final score of 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-1. The triumph gave Cross his first national singles title as well.
Both champions earned the singles and doubles sweep, with Tomashevskaya capturing the doubles crown with fellow Ontarian Rachel Krzyzak and Cross with singles runner-up Stakusic. It was the second doubles crown for both competitors, as Tomashevskaya and Cross each won the U12 outdoor crown last summer.
