On the heels of Tuesday’s wins by Félix Auger-Aliassime (Montréal, QC) and Joshua Peck (Calgary, AB), Canadians Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) and Filip Peliwo (Vancouver, BC) also reached the second round of the Subaru Sherbrooke Futures. The US$25 000 International Tennis Federation tournament will be underway until March 13 on the Christian Bourque indoor courts at the Rock Forest recreation centre in Sherbrooke.
Just back from Guadeloupe after playing for Canada in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first-round battle against France, Dancevic took on 16-year-old Jack Mingjie Lin (Markham, ON). The first two sets were tight but the veteran found his game in the third to claim victory (7-6(3), 6-7(5), 6-0). Dancevic will face qualifier Mico Santiago of the US in the next round.
Peliwo entered the second round with a three-set win over Sebastian Fanselow of Germany in just under two hours. The Canadian was strong on serve and hit 12 aces versus 6 for his opponent with a first-serve percentage of 86%. In the next round, he will clash with Alex Kuznetsov of the US, who took home the Gatineau Futures trophy last Sunday.
Peck was back on court today for his second-round match. He ended up falling in two sets (6-2, 6-3) to Hugo Nys of France, who toppled second seed Germain Gigounon.
Tomorrow, Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime will go head-to-head against Daniel Smethurst of Great Britain at 6 p.m. for a spot in the quarterfinals.
