Vanessa Wong leads the semifinal field at the U18 Indoor Rogers Junior National Championships, taking place this week at Mayfair East and Mayfair Parkway in Markham, Ont.
The No. 1 seed of the girls’ draw, Wong advanced via a 6-1, 6-2 win over qualifier Emma Miceli. Wong is going for her second straight U18 indoor championship after winning it last year. The 17-year-old has won a junior national title in all four age categories – U12, U14, U16, and U18.
In the semifinals, she will take on fellow Ontario native Natasha Sengphrachanh, who posted an identical 6-1, 6-2 score line in the quarter-finals over No. 5 seed Ariana Arseneault.
The bottom half of the draw will pit Ontarian Ines Milosevic versus British Columbian Sasha Vagramov. For her part, Vagramov won 7-5, 6-3 versus No. 5-seeded Anca Craciun.
On the boys’ side, Gabriel Champoux of Quebec secured a big upset by eliminating top-seeded Victor Krustev 6-4, 7-6(5) in Wednesday’s quarter-finals. His semifinal foe will be No. 9 seed Clarke Wilson of Ontario, a 7-6(5), 6-3 victor against Liam Draxl.
