Tennis Canada announced Tuesday that STADE IGA in Montreal will host the upcoming Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II playoff tie between Canada and Ukraine on April 21 and 22, 2018.
“We are looking forward to coming back to play at home in a place that all the girls know well as it functions as our National Training Centre,” said Canadian Fed Cup captain Sylvain Bruneau. “After having played on the road in front of thousands of Romanian fans, we are happy to have the spectators on our side this time, which is always an invaluable advantage. No matter the players who will represent Ukraine, we will concentrate on our preparation and our ultimate goal, to conserve our place among the 16 best nations in the world.”
Fed Cup returns to Montreal after the last successful tie was played at STADE IGA at the same time last year when Canada caused an upset over Kazakhstan by a score of 3-2 to secure their spot in the World Group II.
Canada currently sits at no. 18 in the Fed Cup rankings. On February 3 and 4, it was a young Canadian team who fell to Romania, a more experiences team. Bianca Andreescu (Mississauga), Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill), Gabriela Dabrowski (Ottawa) and Katherine Sebov (Toronto) represented Canada during the tie. The Quebec natives Françoise Abanda (Montreal) and Eugenie Bouchard (Montreal), who did not dispute the previous tie, could potentially participate this time around. The players for both teams will be announced in April.
Ukraine, who currently sits at no. 15 in the Fed Cup rankings, pushed Australia to their limits before conceding in the decisive doubles match earlier in February. The country’s best player Elina Svitolina is currently ranked no. 4 in the world. She did not, however, participate in the team’s last tie.
The winner of this tie will secure a place in the World Group II for 2019. The losing nation will be relegated to the Zonal Group.
Tickets are available now starting at just $25 per day or $40 for the weekend. A special rate is also offered for children aged 12 years and under at only $15 per day or $20 for both days. Fans who wish to attend the upcoming tie can purchase their tickets by calling 514-790-1245, online at www.tenniscanada.com/tournoi/fed-cup, or at the STADE IGA Ticketing Office.
Matches will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 with the presentation of two singles matches. Sunday’s lineup will feature two singles matches followed by a doubles match beginning at noon.
