Sharon Fichman is one win away from capturing both titles at the Winnipeg National Bank Challenger presented by Manshield Construction after she took home the doubles crown and won her singles semifinal match at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday.

Fichman ousted Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to earn her spot in the final. Kracijek had defeated fellow Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak a day earlier.

Standing in the Canadian’s way of the trophy now is Kristie Ahn of the United States. Seeded No. 5, Ahn upset top-seeded Jovana Jaksic of Serbia 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals.

Fichman has never faced Ahn in singles before, but should be familiar with the No. 311-ranked athlete as she was one-half of the duo she and partner Jaksic defeated in the doubles final on Saturday. Fichman and Jaksic, the No. 1-seeded team at the $25,000 ITF Pro Circuit tournament, had no trouble with their opponents, beating Americans Ahn and Lorraine Guillermo 6-2, 6-1 to claim the crown.

Ranked world No. 392 herself, Fichman is competing in just her third tournament since May and ninth of the year due to an injury-riddled season.

On the men’s side of the joint event, Filip Peliwo couldn’t make it two Canadians in the championship matches as he fell in the semifinals of the $15,000 Winnipeg National Bank Futures presented by Manshield Construction. After upsetting the No. 1 seed in the quarter-finals, No. 8-seeded Peliwo dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to No. 7 seed Fritz Wolmarans of South Africa.

In Sunday’s final, Wolmarans will take on No. 2-seeded Ecuadorian Gonzalo Escobar.

The Winnipeg National Bank Challenger final featuring Fichman and Ahn will take place at 11 a.m. local time/12 p.m. ET on Sunday while the men’s Winnipeg National Bank Futures championship match will follow, not before 1 p.m. local time at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club.
