Canadians Sharon Fichman (Toronto) and Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, Ont.) are still in contention for a title at the Odlum Brown VanOpen in Vancouver after a close 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-4 triumph over No. 2 seeds Lyudmyla Kichenok and Mandy Minella at the $100,000 ITF Pro Circuit Challenger on Thursday.

Fichman and Zhao, who recently were quarter-finalists at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Toronto, will take on British-American pair Johanna Konta and Maria Sanchez for a place in the final. Their match is scheduled for Friday at not before 6:30 p.m. local time/9:30 p.m. ET.

Fellow Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and Japanese partner Shuko Aoyama were upset in the quarter-finals, with the No. 1-seeded pair falling to Kiki Bertens and Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 7-5.

In the singles draw, No. 1 seed Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium – a former Wimbledon semifinalist – is taking on No. 6 seed Bertens of Netherlands in the quarter-finals. Other seeds still alive are No. 4 Yanina Wickmayer and No. 7 Konta.

A combined event, the Odlum Brown VanOpen also is a $100,000 ATP Challenger tournament. The men’s singles draw has seen upsets galore, with not a single seeded player remaining in the quarter-finals. On Thursday, Daniel Evans ousted No. 7 seed Taro Daniel 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) while Brydan Klein eliminated No. 4 Ruben Bemelmans 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4) to set up an all-Brit quarter-final between each other.

Estonian Jurgen Zopp, who upset top-seeded Ricardas Berankis in the first round, is still competing and will face Dudi Sela of Israel for a spot in the semifinals.

The Odlum Brown VanOpen, a combined $100,000 ITF Pro Circuit women’s tournament and $100,000 ATP Challenger, takes place from August 15 to 23 at Hollyburn Country Club in Vancouver. For more information and complete draws, please click here.
