After qualifying for the tournament, 23-year-old Filip Peliwo has won his first ATP Challenger title at the Knoxville Challenger in Tennessee on Sunday. He defeated American Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-2 in 58 minutes to claim the title.
The pair traded breaks of serve in the early stages of the match. Both battled to hold serve in the set and, when serving to stay in the first set, Kudla would feel the service pressure. Peliwo would break Kudla for a second time to take the opener 6-4 after 34 minutes.
Peliwo was winning 72% of his first service points to Kudla’s 53%. Both men had one ace.
The Canadian jumped out to an early break lead and consolidated on serve to lead 3-0 in the second set.
Unbothered on serve in the second, Peliwo would storm out to a 5-2 and pressure Kudla once again on serve. The American would fall behind in what would be the final game of the match and surrender another break to Peliwo.
Peliwo finished the match with four aces, 81% of first service points won and a 50% winning percentage on his second service points. He did not face a break point after surrendering serve in the opening game of the match.
This is Peliwo’s biggest career title to date. He will also claim a new career-high ranking of 195 when Monday’s rankings are released.
