Fresh off his junior U.S. Open doubles title in New York City, Denis Shapovalov dropped by CTV News in Toronto and sat down with us to help us learn more about Canada’s newest junior Grand Slam champion.

Q & A with Tennis Canada:

What was different about the US Open compared to other tournaments?

There was a lot more fans watching the matches and it felt like a bigger tournament, also because after every match we were getting interviewed. At Wimbledon and the Australian Open, there was nobody really interviewing me after matches.

What did you like best about the US Open outside winning the title?

We got to go out to downtown one day which was pretty cool. We saw where the Twin Towers used to be and we saw the Statue of Liberty. We got to go around to Times Square a bit, and that was really cool too.

How would you describe your season?

It’s been a mostly good season, I’ve had some ups and downs. I feel like I’ve improved a lot the past three months, I’ve been stepping up my game and the results have shown that.

How have you improved over the past year?

I think overall my game has gotten solidly better. My ‘B’ game has improved, so if I’m not playing well one day I can still find a way to beat the guy on the other side of the net. That’s the best part of my game. My ‘A’ game I feel is still better than a lot of people; I can beat a lot of people when I’m on my ‘A’ game. But if I have to bring out my ‘B’ game, I also have a chance to win.

How would you describe yourself on and off the court?

I’d describe myself as a very energetic and emotional player. I bring all my emotions into my match. I feel like on court I can get angry at myself a lot. Off-court, I’m a very calm guy and I feel like I’m pretty nice off the court. I don’t get that emotional.

What are thoughts on Felix  as a player and doubles partner?

He’s a great player. He’s got a lot of talent. If he keeps working hard, he’s going to be a very good player. As a doubles partner, he really helps me play better during the matches. If my game is not there, if I’m not feeling a couple volleys, usually the partner tends to play worse also. But if I’m feeling down, Felix steps it up or has some good returns and brings my confidence up as well. We play very well together, and we like playing with each other so that helps. We’re good friends on and off the court.

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

I want to win the Junior Davis Cup next week and I think we have a good chance of doing it; we have a great team. I also hope to do well at the Orange Bowl.
