The singles champions were crowned on Wednesday at the U16 Rogers Indoor Junior Nationals being held at the Ile des Soeurs tennis club in Montreal.
The tournament’s second seed Joshua Lapadat of Ontario caused the upset by defeating the top seed Samuel Paquette of Quebec 6-3, 6-4 to capture the singles title. After dropping the first set in his second round match, the 15-year-old Ontario native was dominant throughout the rest of the tournament, including his match against Paquette on Wednesday. The final was a rematch of the 2016 U14 Indoor Junior Nationals final, where it was also Lapadat who got the better of Paquette and took home the title. Ilya Tiraspolsky finished third thanks to a 7-6(6), 7-6(5) victory over his fellow Ontario native Marko Stakusic.
The 2016 U14 Indoor Junior Nationals female champion Jada Bui of Ontario was also in finals action on Wednesday as she faced Rachel Hanford of Ontario. Bui, the top seed, had been playing exceptional tennis throughout the week, overpowering her opponents in practically every match. She topped fifth-seeded Hanford 6-2, 6-2 to take home the title. It was Mia Kupres of Alberta who finished third thanks to a walkover.
It was a title sweep for Bui in Montreal, as she was also crowned doubles champion with her partner Corina Spasojevic. On the boys’ side, Paquette claimed the doubles crown on Tuesday playing alongside Justus Alexandre Agbo.
