Seventeen year old Canadian Katarina Kopcalic captured her first ITF junior singles title on Saturday at a Grade 3 event in Tunisia.
Seeded eighth in the draw, Kopcalic defeated the tournament’s first, third, and fourth seeds en route to the trophy. In the final she defeated third-seeded Zani Barnard of South Africa 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-1.
Kopcalic, a former Canadian junior national champion, will play another Grade 3 event in Algeria next week.
Meanwhile, in France, it will be an all-Canadian girls singles final at the Grade 1 Beaulieu-sur-Mer tournament between Bianca Andreescu and Charlotte Robillard-Millette. Both have enjoyed breakthrough seasons on the ITF junior circuit and Robillard-Millette goes into the championship on a nine match win streak after being crowned champion last week in Istres.
