Team Canada was perfect on Saturday and are only one victory away from winning their Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II first round tie against the Netherlands.

World no. 70 Bianca Andreescu was up first for the Canadian side and took care of Richel Hogenkamp 6-4, 6-1 in just over an hour to give the away team a 1-0 lead in s’Hertogenbosch.

Playing her first Fed Cup match since 2017, Françoise Abanda did not disappoint in her return, defeating world no. 129 Arantxa Rus 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-4 to give Canada a commanding 2-0 lead after day one. The match was filled with service breaks with both players impressively varying their style of play, including several incredible shots at the net off Abanda’s racquet.

She battled from start to finish and ultimately came out on top against a tough and feisty opponent, defeating Arantxa Rus 7-6(8), 4-6 and 6-4.

Andresscu will try and seal the tie for Canada tomorrow against Arantxa Rus. Her match will be followed by Abanda vs. Richel Hogenkamp and the doubles match featuring Andreescu and Gabriela Dabrowski.
