With winter officially upon us, the East Coast is guaranteed to heat up this season – at least on the tennis courts.

The 2016-2017 campaign of the Atlantic University Tennis League got off to a hot start on November 26 and 27 in Truro, Nova Scotia. The Cougar Dome played host to seven teams from six different universities across Atlantic Canada in the first event of the season.

Memorial University posted a 3-0 record over the two day tournament to dominate group play thanks in large part to school captain, Josh Lehr. Back from attending University of Texas, Lehr missed the final two events of the 2015-2016 season for the Seahawks. But Lehr didn’t skip a beat in his return, winning five of the five matches he played.

Two-time defending Nestor Cup champions, Dalhousie University got an early taste of this season’s extremely competitive field as they also took part Pool A action. The Tigers suffered 4-3 upsets to both Memorial and St Mary’s University.

Over in Pool B, a fresh-faced University of News Brunswick squad proved that their new lineup will be a challenge for any school this season.
